When Akris launched its iconic Ai bag in 2010, the response was overwhelmingly positive. It’s since become one of the most beloved designs within Akris accessories.
The Ai introduced woven horsehair fabric into the Akris family - a rare and resilient material. Albert’s approach was to translate the functionality of a traditional tote but add architecture to the shape by making the sides foldable in and outwards to a trapezoid, a signature derived from the A in Akris. It thoughtfully embodies his belief that “functionality is beautiful.”
These extraordinary handbags are produced by craftsmen in Germany. The detailed process starts with horsehair being combed and hand-sorted, carefully selecting each piece. From there, it’s woven by a machine dating back to the early 1800’s. Precious is the material, as only one meter (three feet) of fabric can be produced in a day.
