Akris’ Fall/Winter 2020 runway is a graceful fusion of architecture and nature. The set takes its inspiration from the design by French sculptors Jan and Joël Martel (1896-1966). The twins, hailing from Nantes, were among some of the founding members of the Union des Artistes Modernes (UAM), a French union of artists and architects active between 1929-1959, and had their work displayed in several noteworthy shows throughout Paris.
Their most famous design came in 1925 when they created four concrete trees to adorn architect Robert Mallet-Stevens’ Cubist Garden at the 1925 International Exposition of Decorative Arts in Paris. The innovative sculptures had quadrangular planes that attached vertically, acting as foliage. It’s from these trees that Akris Creative Director Albert Kriemler found his inspiration for the Fall/Winter 2020 runway set design. With their intersection between calculated design and the natural world, they fit effortlessly into the landscape of Akris.
